Organic Olive Oil
We are all subject to the trends and fads that are going on around us. Whether or not we choose to take part in the current trends is our choice, based on our personal taste, values and interest. There is currently a fad in the food market, with more people opting to prepare their own foods at home and to search for fresher, quality ingredients. There is also a trend toward purchasing organically grown foods.
A huge variety of foods can be purchased in an organic version. What this means is that the products were grown using only naturally produced fertilizers and non-chemical pest control. It's a more natural method of farming that is better for both the environment and people who eat the organic food, as they avoid potentially harmful chemicals from pesticides.
The number of organic products on the market is constantly increasing. You can find produce that is organically grown, canned vegetables that are organically grown and even bread and pasta from organically grown grains. Organic olive oil is another options and the one I want to discuss.
Olive oil is known to hold many health benefits over other types of oils and fats. It has a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and phenols that are heart healthy. Many people are opting to cook with and add olive oil to their foods in place of the less healthy fats that have been traditionally used in the United States.
Often those who are looking for good quality olive oil are also those who try to buy organic foods. This means that they prefer organic olive oil over regular. But is there a difference?
The most important difference in organic olive oil to those purchasing it is usually just the fact that the olives were grown organically. This is reason enough to choose this type of oil. However, is it possible that the different agricultural techniques could alter the taste or quality of the olive oil?
This is a good question, especially considering that the soil olives are grown in play a major role in their ultimate flavor and quality. It seems as though organic olive oil is of a very good quality. You can find organic extra virgin olive oil to rival the best of olive oils. The taste is a bit more subtle and delicate, and the oil is perfect.
As with any organic product organic olive oil is more expensive than comparable oils. This is because this specific type of farming requires more care and expense to grow top quality products, as opposed to products grown with modern methods that use harmful shortcuts. Still it is very worth the small price difference for many.
Next time you pick up a bottle of oil, try some organic olive oil and see for yourself just what the difference is, if it's mostly in your conscience or if there is a significant flavor quality difference, too.
